My Favorite Mask: ScarJo’s Obsessed Too!
If you’re a regular reader of Beauty Is Wellness, you know that I’m obsessed with enzyme exfoliants. They leave your skin smooth and glowing without the scrubbing, which is perfect for sensitive skin. Of all the enzyme exfoliants out there, the simplest, most effective mask is one ingredient only: raw honey.
Not only does raw honey—the raw part is important, since it contains active enzymes and antibacterial compounds that are absent after honey is heated—loosen dead skin cells and smooth skin, it draws moisture out of the air, into the skin, and fights blemish-causing bacteria.
If you don’t have Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care Rejuvenating Enzyme Mask or La Bella Figura Bio Active Purifying Mask in your cabinet, you can slather plain old raw honey on your skin and get the same smoothing power! Cheap and so effective! Leave the raw honey on clean skin for 20 minutes and you’ll see amazingly smooth skin afterward.
Of course, if you’re a celebrity like Scarlett Johansson, you can take things a step further. ScarJo loves honey masks too, but she uses Manuka honey—the Cadillac of raw honey, with incredibly powerful healing abilities (it can be used in medical treatment of wounds!)—as her honey exfoliating mask. Manuka honey is pricey, but if you want to splurge, it’s a celeb-worthy natural skincare option.
Here’s what Scarlett had to say to Style.com’s Beauty Counter column about her honey mask discovery:
“I am a great believer in using natural products and drinking lots of water. Something I’ve discovered recently is actually using honey as a mask. I use Manuka honey. You just warm your face so that your pores are open (you can steam your face right after getting out of the shower), and then you just take a spoon and apply the honey directly to your face and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. It really adds an amazing glow and your skin is so soft afterwards. It pulls out the impurities—and it’s a nice foundation, especially if you are going to a big event where you want a great glow and you want to take that extra 15 minutes to do a treatment before you put your makeup on. It preps your skin in a really nice way.”
Natural beauty goes glam, once again!
