Whip Up This Winter Weapon: Coconut Rose Body Balm
I can’t wait to try this Coconut Rose Body Balm recipe from one of my favorite natural beauty chefs, Sophie Uliano. The coconut oil is deeply hydrating and the rose essential oil is fantastic for soothing and healing chapped skin.
All of the ingredients are easy to come by, and you may already have everything, except the emulsifying wax, in your home. A great source for emulsifying wax (and tons of other natural ingredients to use in making homemade beauty products) is Mountain Rose Herbs. While you’re ordering, pick up some of their bulk teas and spices for your kitchen!
Here’s the recipe, straight from Sophie:
Coconut Rose Body Balm
This is a delicate, yet rich balm, which is a wonderful treat to nourish your dry winter skin with.
1tbsp dried rose petals
1/2 cup boiling water
4tbsp virgin coconut oil
8tsp emulsifying wax
6 drops of rose absolute essential oil (optional for a deluxe balm)
Place the rose petals in a glass jar and cover with boiling water. Steep for 1/2 hour.
Place the coconut oil in a metal bowl and place the bowl in a large saucepan with two inches of boiling water in the bottom. Allow the oil to melt completely. Remove from heat.
In another metal bowl, place 8tbsp of the rose infusion and the emulsifying wax. Allow the wax to melt as you stir. Remove from the heat.
Now you have to move quickly as you want the infusion mixture to be about the same temperature as the melted oil. Using a whisk, gradually add the infusion to the coconut oil, whisking vigorously.
If adding rose absolute, drop into the mixture for a final whisk.
Spoon the balm into a 4-ounce jar and allow to cool before screwing on lid.
If you are not going to use the balm immediately, keep it in the fridge. When chilled, the balm will harden, so leave out of fridge for a few hours before using. In the winter months I keep mine in my bathroom. If not stored in fridge, use up within 3 weeks. (6 month shelf-life in fridge).
Not interested in making your own balm? Try using organic coconut oil on its own as a moisturizer and makeup remover. You’ll be shocked when you see it working better than your expensive lotions!
